5. Under such conditions smectite clays can be formed in presence of silica and basic cations (Ca & Mg) if the soil pH is above neutral. 6. Vertisols profile becomes evident if we examine red-black soil catenas, abundant in Africa, Indian subcontinent and Australia (Blokhuis ). Eg. Thus, a yr soil fertility management experiment was conducted in the semi-arid tropical region of central India to evaluate the impact of crop residue C input on soybean (Glycine max L.)–safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) cropping sequence and SOC sequestration in soils of Vertisolic order (Vertisols).

Long-term experiments can be used to assess management induced changes in soil properties and sustainability of the management system in terms of the productivity. Such data are scanty, especially in the semi-arid tropics (SAT) region. A long-term experiment established in at ICRISAT in India on Vertisols with two management treatments; improved management (IM), comprising semi .   Grazing management had no effect on SOC or TN on grey soils (Vertisols), but for red soils (Lixisols), significantly higher levels of SOC were found for both the 0 to 5 and 5 to 10‐cm soil depths (03% and 027% respectively) and associated with increased TN.

Soil organic carbon (SOC), macro- and micronutrient status, and nitrogen (N) mineralization were studied in a soil profile managed with organic (OMP), chemical (CMP), and integrated (IMP) management practices for 3 years () under a soybean - durum wheat cropping sequence. The most significant buildup of SOC and nutrients was in OMP, followed by IMP and then CMP. COVID Resources. Vertisols, because of their high water-holding capacity, are suited to dryland crop production in semi-arid environments with uncertain and heavy rainfall, Selected physical and chemical properties of Vertisols that affect their' management for crop production are discussed.

Due to their high clay content. Soil and crop management practices. Sorghum and wheat were grown annually under rainfed and irrigated conditions, respectively.

Hybrid varieties CSH 16 for sorghum (with – days maturity duration) and NIAW for wheat (with days maturity duration) were used for the entire 28 years period of the experiment.

A Vertisol, or Vertosol, is a soil type in which there is a high content of expansive clay minerals, many of them known as montmorillonite, that form deep cracks in drier seasons or a phenomenon known as argillipedoturbation, alternate shrinking and swelling causes self-ploughing, where the soil material consistently mixes itself, causing some Vertisols to have an extremely deep A.

Yule, D. () Water management of Vertisols in the semi-arid tropics. In Management of Vertisols under semi-arid conditions. IBSRAM Proceedings No.6, Vertisols are tropical soils that occur world-wide ( million ha) with high agricultural and other engineering potentials.

However, they are underutilized as most of their physical characteristics make management techniques difficult and highly localized. This paper aims to highlight the characteristics, genesis and management strategies of Vertisols for sustainable use.

This book is intended to provide comprehensive and state-of-the-art information about Vertisols worldwide. Special attention is given to the use and management of soils such as fertilizer use, crop selection, soil tillage, water restriction on land including irrigation, and soil erosion.

In Indian semi‐arid tropics (SATs), low water and crop productivity in Vertisols and associated soils are mainly due to poor land management. In ‘Proceedings of the First Regional Seminar on Management of Vertisols under Semi-arid Conditions’.

Nairobi, Kenya, 1–6 Dec. Soil water management, tillage, cropping systems, and nutrient management pose special problems in heavy cracking clays. These soils mainly belong to Vertisols and vertic subgroups of other soils and occur mainly in (sub) tropical areas with a pronounced dry season.

Management of soil water is the important aspect of soil management in the semi-arid tropics. The present experiment was conducted under various bio-climatic condition such as sub-humid moist (> mm), sub-humid dry ( mm), semiarid dry (mm), semi-arid moist ( mm) and arid (Vertisols and to % of SOC in Alfisols.
