The Highwayman Lyrics: The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees / The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon the cloudy seas / The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor.   A clip I made a few years ago for my students to illustrate the work of Alfred Noyes using the illustrations by Charles Keeping and the music of Loreena McKennitt. Alfred Noyes, The Highwayman.

The dramatic story poem "The Highwayman" has long been a favorite in narrative poetry, and justifiably so - it's exciting and memorable. The haunting illustrations in this picture book version of the poem are a perfect complement to the text - I've seen several illustrated versions, and this is definitely my favorite!/5(54).       The Highwayman This is a book which although at first seems well written the story line is too far fetched to accomplish what all fictional stories try to achieve namely to be believable. The language is too modern particularly when male characters step out of their comfort zones and start cursing 21 Century swear words like the F word which /5(82). Alfred Noyes's famous poem still has the power to thrill us as we read the story of the highwayman and his doomed love for Bess, the landlord's black-eyed daughter. Charles Keeping's stunning illustrations won this book the Kate Greenaway Medal in /5(3).

Given that "The Highwayman" is Craig Johnson's 3rd so-called novella it's surprising to see the number of The Highwayman book & 2 star reviews that primarily gripe about the short story format.
